Fish, anyone?????

Last we we took the metro, quite early, to experience the Tsukiji (Fish) Market. Words and pictures cannot describe the almost frantic activity of those sorting, cleaning, packaging, and transferring countless kinds of fish (from huge chunks of Tuna to wiggly eels) which had been caught the previous night and then auctioned to restaurant and food vendors and then brought to this intermediate staging area. As far as one could see, trucks, hand carts, motorized scooter, front loaders, going every which way, so that one had to really be careful not to get hit! Workmen in their boots, sloshing around on the wet floor, brushing away bloody water and fish parts....not a pretty site! We bought a package of fresh scallops (15 in all) for 1500 yen (about $15), and we'll get 3 delicious meals with those! They were nicely packed in a styrofoam container with ice to keep the package cold.

In an adjacent area, there were several aisles of food vendors, and little restaurants where people were waiting in line to eat in these little "hole in the wall" places, hot and crowded, but no doubt serving popular and fresh food!

We got back to our apartment 3 hrs. later, truly amazed that this goes on every day!
